Alright, since that huge blow up on my cosplay, I had sooo many questions about my Nemesis costume that come up many times so, since I have a day off (FINALLY) I'll gather every questions in here with answers. If you ever have more questions that doesn't appear in here, feel free to ask here too c:
How did you make your armor parts?
All made out of Eva Foam. If you don't know what it is, it's some garage carpet that you can buy in any hardware store. It's flexible and solid. You can buy 2 different tickness of this, there's the usual 1 cm large that you buy in packs of 4 in puzzles sides for 12 $ CAN and the huge roll around 0.5 cm large for around 25 - 30$ CAN (You have a lot of material for the price you pay. I still have lots of left overs) The amazing thing about Eva is that you can heat it, bend it, wait for it to become cold and it'll keep its shape. Not as much as Worbla does, but it's still better than nothing :'D Also, I used some craft foam, it's around 0.2 cm large for small details like the shoulders and the wings. And used another craft foam around 0.4 cm large for bigger details just like the legs armors. Some details just like the front belt's spirals are sculpted with a Dremel.
The only place I used Worbla was the shoes 'cause it HAD to be solid. I took an old pair of shoes and covered the thing with worbla and added the details to make it accurate to Nemesis's shoes. Finally, the sword and the wings were sculpted out of insulation foam. It's pink and light but not solid. So It's many hours of sanding over and over. The thing with insulation foam is that you cannot directly paint it, you have to put gesso or woodglue on it or else it'll take hours to dry OR if you use non-acrylic based spray paint, it'll make you foam melt and you'll cry for wasting you time. When the woodglue is applied (put around 3 or 4 layers) you gotta SAND IT TOO. soo much sanding to be done it's terrible ;-;;; When you are done, apply the paint. On the wings, I wanted to keep the gradien effect of her main skin so I took a gold spray paint and put it on the tip of it. When the paint is done, I used resin to make the thing solid. I knew people were going to bump into my wings so they HAD to smash poeple when passing through the crowd. [I'm kidding obviously huahuahau]
So overall, making this costume was just a bunch of experimentation. I didn't know where I was going, all my patterns were made by myself. I usually refer myself on the internet to find patterns but since almost nobody did that costume yet, I had to do everything myself :'D Just finding how I could make the boots armor look 3D was a real pain.
How heavy is your sword ?
mmh. //puts sword on balance thingy // ... 5lbs? !? :'D I'm pretty sure it's more than that but it's not really heavy. If course if you lift it with the stick in the air for a while it can be heavy. But overall, in the con it wasn't the biggest problem I had to carry it around with me. This was my biggest goal before making the sword: IT. MUST. NOT. BE. HEAVY. Or else I'll complain at the con all day long knowing myself. haha :'D Like I said in the previous question, It was made of insulation foam, which is very light. And all the details are Eva foam. the Only heavy part is between the stick and the sword. The sort of round thing (don't know how it's called in english) because the base is foam and all the lines are wood sticks glues one after another one. That makes it heavier. Also, I didn't put resin on my sword due to money and time issues.
Is your sword flimsy ?
yes and no. Depends on where. Of course I wouldn't recommend swigging my sword all over the place. But it is still quite solid. I mean, the stick is well attached to the foam. It broke TWICE while making it so I transform all those week points into the most solid parts of the sword.
If you force it, yes I can break in half. The only places where I muuust repair is the tip of the sword. I didn't have the time to resin the sword and when I was carrying it around or photoshoots, the tip was always on the floor and it scratched it. The paint ripped off and the foam is all messy. So yeah if my sword is hitting something else, it would scratch the paint and bump the foam. That's why I'll repair it and resin it before a next con ^^'
Why is the helmet not done ?
uhr that friggin helmet. It was the last thing I started/finished on the costume because I had NO idea how to make it. Only 3 days before the convention I found out how for the front part. (and it was pretty fucking stupid ;-
But the rest, I'm still trying to figure out what is THE BEST way to make it. So yeah, I had time issues making the helmet. that's why it's not done. And I REALLY REALLY wanted to wear Nemesis for the con after 5 months of building. I couldn't just... put it aside. If I would have, knowing myself I would have never wear it at all to any other con after. So yeah even though I was missing few stuff on my costume, it was totally a great experience :'D I felt amazing, powerful and badass :'DD
Will you bring your Nemesis to a con in the US or elsewhere than Montreal?
NOP. It's sad to say that Nemesis CANNOT be carried around in many cons. Most of all because the sword can barely fit in the back of my car. It takes the WHOLE place and when I travel in cons, we are really tight with luggages. And I cannot travel alone, I must be with two other people to change drivers. People asked to ship the sword over to the hotel, but, check the size. It'll cost me way too much just to ship it for a weekend :/
So Nemesis might be brought back to Montreal Comic con next year
But not any other cons. ^^'
How long it wook to make the costume ?
5 or 4 months including school, work etc. I had two full weeks before Otakuthon to finish it and for those two weeks I was working 10 hours per day.
:blackbullet: How much it costs you to make Nemesis ? :blackbullet:
I've calculated around 500$ for everything. There's also few materials I already had.
If I want a Sword for my own Nemesis Cosplay, can I commission one?
I mean, If you are ready to pay 500$ + shipping for it, maybe I can take it. But otherwise it's a no. It takes a long time to make, around 40 hours. Also I need space to make it. In summer It was appropriate since I could work outside, but right now the temperature is slowly going down and it's not fun to work while it's cold :/ + cold temperature makes the sword harder to make as for the painting part. (doesn't dry properly in cold temperature)
BUUUT I still take smaller prop commissions if you are interested just visit my Facebook
in the ''prop wishlist album'' I have props that I would love to do. If you don't see the one you need, just MP me and I'll see if I can make it c:
Can you post the patterns of your cosplay here on deviantart so we can use as reference?
I was thinking about it for a while, I might do it just to offer some reference to people but it won't be some life size pattern that you can print with PDF file etc etc. 'Cause I really suck at that :'D I'll post my notes and the basic patterns so you can eventually make your own to your size. It'll take time though. But I'll do my best to do it for the next two months !
Are you going to do more Smite cosplay?
TOTALLY. Probably not for now, but I have Hades in my wishlist and still wondering when I could make this and for what con etc. Analysing the thing right now
It's all the questions I had so far if you have any more stuff to ask just do it'll be a pleasure for me to answer ! ^^
Any wips about my Nemesis cosplay
